Hot Dog Sauce

Hot dogs with Sauce, Chili Dog, Coney Dog - Wells Farms Beef - Madison, WI

I have learned that different parts of the country (or event state) call this something different.  In Southern Ohio this is a Hot Dog with Sauce, in Northern Ohio it's a Coney Dog, other places it's a Chili Dog.  Whatever you call it, it's a fun food to make and eat.

With an abundance of hot dogs and hot dog buns in the house (leftover from our youngest recent baseball themed birthday party), a pound of ground beef thawed in the fridge, and football playing in the living room, hot dogs with sauce seemed like the perfect dinner.

Here is the recipe for the best hot dog sauce you can make (in my opinion)!  This is based off a recipe from a nurse I used to work with in Southern Ohio that was famous for her hot dog sauce.  She recently passed away way too soon from cancer and her daughter shared her recipe online.  I tweaked it a bit with some spices.  I will never make hot dog sauce without thinking of Melissa now that her daughter shared the recipe!

HOT DOG SAUCE

1 lb Wells Farms ground beef

1/4 c. brown sugar

1 c. ketchup

1/2 c. water

1 tsp chili powder

1 tsp cumin

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp dry mustard

1 tsp smoked paprika

Brown ground beef.  Add the rest of the ingredients and cook until hot and sauce thickens a bit.

Serve on all beef hotdogs in a bun with cheese. Add some crushed Fritos for a little crunch!
