Patty Melt and Big Mac Wrap

This week, you get options! I couldn’t decide on just one recipe to share this week, so why not two? If you grabbed the Recipe Challenge Bundle, you’ve already got 2 lbs of ground beef—perfect for making both options!

First up, the Patty Melt—inspired by again this week by a little nostalgia. Back when Kenny and I first started dating, we’d go to Steak ‘n Shake quite a bit. There was one near Ohio State’s campus, and it became our go-to spot. Funny enough, on our first visit, we both ordered the exact same thing: a Frisco Melt, fries with cheese sauce, and a chocolate shake. From that point on, we never ordered anything else! While it’s been a LONG time since we’ve been to a Steak 'n Shake, this Patty Melt recipe is my homemade take on their classic sandwich—deliciously melty and packed with flavor.

Then there’s the Big Mac Wrap— this recipe can be a lifesaver for busy nights. With our girls constantly on the go with sports and activities, quick and tasty meals are a must. This wrap delivers all the flavors of a Big Mac, minus the drive-thru, and comes together in no time. Want to change it up? Turn it into a Big Mac Salad for an even lighter twist!

Which one are you making first?

About the Cut

Ground Beef

About:

Ground Beef - A favorite by all and a freezer staple.  Versatility and rich flavor make ground beef the most popular cut of beef available. It's perfect for burgers, tacos, casseroles, and everything in-between.

Optimal Cooking Methods:
Grill, roast/bake, pan-broil/skillet, braise/pot roast, broil, smoke are just a few to name.

Patty Melt

2 TBSP Butter

1 large onion, sliced

1/2 tsp sugar

1 lb Wells Farms ground beef

1/2 tsp steak seasoning

2-3 dashes Worcestershire

1 TBSP + 1 tsp mayo

1 Tbsp ketchup

1 Tbsp French/Western Dressing

1/8 tsp garlic powder

Sliced Bread

1/2 Tbsp sweet relish (or chopped up sweet pickles - I often don't have relish in the fridge, so I just chop up pickles)

Cheese of choice - We used Muenster and American but you could use Swiss, Cheddar, etc.

Directions:

Onions -

  1. Add the butter to a cast iron or heavy bottom pan and heat over medium heat.
  2. Slice the onions and add to the buttered pan and heat over medium heat.
  3. Sprinkle the sugar over the onions. (The sugar speeds up the process and intensifies the browning).
  4. Caramelize the onions for approximately 20 mins until they are a rich golden brown.
  5. Remove onions from pan and set aside.

Burger Sauce -

  1. Mix together the mayo, ketchup, dressing, garlic powder, and relish in a small bowl and set aside.

Beef -

  1. Mix together the ground beef, seasoning, and Worcestershire.
  2. Form thin patties in an oblong shape to fit your size of bread.
  3. Fry patties in the same skilled that the onions were cooked in until a nice crust forms on each patty.
  4. Add cheese to start melting
  5. Remove to a plate.

Assemble Burger -

  1. Heat a griddle to about 300 - 350 degrees.
  2. Butter one side of the bread and some of the burger sauce to the other side.
  3. Add bread to the griddle.
  4. Add burger and cheese and then add onions.**
  5. Top with another slice of bread with butter on the outside.
  6. Filp the burger when golden brown.

**Make it a Double - You can always double up and make it a double if you want!
